By Deborah Bowyer 15th Oct 2026
The Lower Chequer in Sandbach has been awarded Taphouse of the Year 2026 for Cheshire by Joule's Brewery.
The historic pub took the title of regional champion for Cheshire.
The Lower Chequer, a Grade II-listed building dating around 1570, is known for its traditional character, real ales and food.
It said on Social Media: "We snuck out for the evening yesterday to the brewery for their annual awards evening, and were stunned to find ourselves the recipient if Cheshire Taphouse of the Year!
"A big thank you is owed to our amazing team of staff, and our wonderful customers, for helping us to make the Chequer such a success."
A spokesperson for Joule's said: "It was a particularly lovely evening for Jess and Kayleigh at the Lower Chequer.
"Having started out managing the pub before taking on the tenancy themselves in 2025, they've continued to make it their own, and it was fantastic to see them recognised."
Congratulations to Jess and Kayleigh and their team!
