A letter from the Queen is set to seal celebrations when members and friends of the Royal British Legion's Sandbach branch meet tonight for a grand centenary event.

Royal British Legion Sandbach branch is 100 years' old this year and to mark the occasion, the branch is holding a 1940s-style dance and buffet at Sandbach Town Hall.

The branch, which has around 60 members and meets at the Masonic Hall in Sandbach, was formed in 1921 and is still going strong.

A special pennant sits at the top of the branch's standard to say it is 100 years old and is on show each time the flag is used.

Chairwoman Majorie Newton said: "We're all looking forward to tonight and delighted it can go ahead. We had an earlier date but it had to be rearranged due to restrictions.

"Getting a letter from the Queen was wonderful. We never expected to get it and I will be referring to it tonight.

"Through everything we've managed to keep the branch alive and this is our way of celebrating the 100 years.

"We were due to have a parade in recognition of our 100 years but unfortunately due to the Pandemic that had to be cancelled.

"I hope everyone has a wonderful evening tonight and I am so pleased that so many of our members can come along."

The final paragraph of the letter from the Queen says: "As you reflect on your long history and consider your future, I have pleasure in sending all those associated with the Royal British Legion my best wishes on this special anniversary."

Guests at tonight's event will enjoy a buffet and dance the night away to the music of the Joe Hearson's Trio.

The event was meant to be held earlier in the year. Branch Secretary Ingrid Victor had made special poppy decorated bottles each containing light which will be used at tonight's event along with bunting and balloons.

Earlier this month, the branch held a service of remembrance at St Mary's Church in Sandbach for 17 members of the Royal British Legion and the Cheshire Regiment Association who had died between 2019 and 2021 during the pandemic.
