Today (23rd) marks the anniversary of the first lockdown and the nation will be remembering the tragic loss of life and standing with those millions who are grieving.

Tuesday, 23rd March, has been chosen as a National Day of Reflection by charity Marie Curie, who is asking people to 'take a minute to reflect and a moment to connect by joining in with a minute's silence at noon, shining a light at 8pm or reflecting on the last year in their own way.

Marie Curie is also encouraging the public to buy colourful flowers to place in their windows or to send to someone who is grieving.

It is hoped this day will allow people to pause and think about the pandemic, the unprecedented losses and to show their support for each other.

"At 8pm we'll hold a minute's silence and come together to light up the night," said the charity.

"Stand outside with a light – a candle, a torch, even your phone - to remember someone who's died and show your support to people going through a bereavement.

"There are still tough times ahead, as the death toll continues to rise.

"This annual day will give us all time to pause and think about this unprecedented loss we're facing, and support each other through grief in the years to come."
