Emergency services are urging Sandbach residents not to cool off in lakes or rivers as temperatures continue to soar and the area celebrates after the lifting of the latest lockdown restrictions.

Cooling off in rivers, canals, ponds, quarries and lakes can have deadly consequences say Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service whose warning has been backed by Cheshire East Council.

Instead council bosses are urging residents to use managed swimming pools and other manned swimming centres rather than be tempted into rivers, canals, ponds, quarries and lakes.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service are urging people, particularly children and teenagers, not to swim anywhere other than in purpose-built and supervised swimming pools unless they are members of an organised swimming group.

If you spot someone in trouble in the water, they urge people to use 999 to call Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service.

A Cheshire East Council spokesperson said: "Swimming or cooling off in lakes or rivers is extremely unwise and we urge people, particularly the young, not to do so.

"We support the message from our colleagues at Cheshire Fire and Rescue – that cooling off in rivers, canals, ponds, quarries and lakes can have deadly consequences."
