Residents living near a community playing field in Sandbach have launched a campaign to raise money to carry out improvements.

Ettiley Heath Playing Field in Sandy Lane was donated to the community in the 1950 by salt firm, Palmer Mann.

Local pub, The Midland Inn in Elworth organised a Christmas hamper raffle and a quiz and committee members have also launched the '100 Club' – a small monthly lottery.

They need 100 people to buy a number for £12 a year. Each month, three numbers will be selected.

Fifty percent of the proceeds will go to the Field Fund and the remainder will be allocated as prize money.

They are also urging as many people as possible to go along the their annual general meeting at Ettiley Heath Community Centre in Elton Road.

Kathryn Sim, secretary of the Ettiley Heath Playing Field committee said: "It's mainly used now by dog walkers and as a handy byway to the local convenience store, although it once it hosted football matches.

"Contrary to many people's understanding, it isn't council-owned and is managed by a committee of local supporters and volunteers. Many locals help to litter-pick and keep the field in good order. But we would like to do a lot more.

"We have a small play area which we would like to extend, we have a poor field surface that we would like to improve and better equipment to manage it. There is also a need for more bins and seating and a wildlife area would be a welcome addition too.

"But we need your help particularly if you live near Elton Road or on the roads bordering the field. We don't have any regular income, depending on donations and small grants.

"We are now setting up the 100 Club and would value your support. We need 100 people to purchase a number for £12 a year. Each month three numbers will be selected . Fifty percent of the proceeds will go to the Field Fund and the remainder will be allocated as prize money.

"In this way we can improve this valuable community facility and everyone could be a winner."

The committee's AGM takes place on Monday, January 15th  at 7 pm and anyone is welcome to attend. New committee members are being elected.
