A Winterley stroke survivor and his wife have set up a new group in Alsager to help stroke survivors.

Alsager Stroke Survivors Speech & Language Group was launched yesterday (Thursday) at the Thirteen Club in Cedar Avenue, Alsager and will meet weekly on Thursday mornings from 10.30 am until 12noon.

It is an off-shoot of the Crewe Stroke Survivors Speech & Language Support Group which is now celebrating its fourth year.

Yesterday was a dream come true for husband and wife, John and Susan Wenlock-Smith, who live near Sandbach and are determined to help others in a similar situation.

Ex-Bentley employee, John, (62) suffered a life-changing stroke in July 2017 and sought the help of the Crewe group to help him get back on his feet.

He and his wife, Susan (60), a retired maths teacher, decided to launch a group nearer to home in Winterley and with the help of others, including Alsager Partnership, have launched the group.

Susan said: "Having a stroke does change your life and John got so much help and support from the Crewe group that we decided to help run this new one in Alsager.

"The Crewe one has done so much to help my husband's confidence and we're so excited to be running this new one.

"It's a marvellous thing to have and can offer so much support and help to stroke survivors and their families who can sometimes feel isolated."

The Alsager group will meet weekly in six week blocks and the cost is £2 per session (including tea, coffee and biscuits) or £10 for all six weeks (one week free).

It aims to help the stroke survivors gain more contact with others, clearing them of their social isolation in a friendly and relaxed setting.

A stroke is a serious life-threatening medical condition that happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off.
