A Sandbach town councillor has launched a new political party just days after facing calls to resign.

Cllr David Jack announced the creation of the Cheshire Action Party's (CAP) this week, which has appointed 20 "lead campaigners".

Among the new party's top priorities are to make Sandbach town council more "open and transparent" and to "end wasteful and unaccountable spending".

Speaking at the party's launch on Sunday, Cllr Jack said: "For too long local town and borough council has gone unchallenged and continues to repeat the same typical mantra of all administrations previously.

"There is a huge groundswell of disaffected and disillusioned voters who see the same old waffle bull and bluster from old parties and nothing new."

Cllr Jack faces calls to resign by Labour councillors on the town council over alleged bullying and "inappropriate" conduct online.

The town ward representative is currently barred from directly contacting town council staff by email because of the alleged bullying.

One of the new party's 16 manifesto "principles" is to "review and renew the staffing structure from top to bottom", which would involve cutting staff numbers.

The party also want the town council to "pursue ownership" of parks within the parish as well as the cobbles and the scotch common.

Cllr Jack, who was appointed as chairman of the CAP, said: "Our fresh new party with a clear manifesto of change, engagement and involvement truly does show that we are listening and responding to the real issues that affect our councils."

The CAP has made an application to the Electoral Commission to get recognised political party status.
