A popular Sandbach pub situated in one of the town's oldest buildings with a rich history is celebrating its eighth birthday tomorrow (Saturday).

It's eight years since Wetherspoons opened the doors at The George in High Street, Sandbach housed in a Grade II listed building.

Two hundred years ago, The George was one of Sandbach's original coaching inns.

In the 1830s, Sandbach was an important stopping place on the roads from London and Birmingham to both Liverpool and Manchester.

Years ago, horse drawn stagecoaches would have stopped off at The George on their long journeys north and south.

But today, The George is part of the Wetherspoon chain of pubs and a regular haunt with townsfolk and visitors to the town alike.

Daniel Hockenhull, a kitchen shift leader who has worked at the High Street pub for six years said: "It's a lovely building to work in.

"I've seen many changes over the years and remember it before it was taken over by Wetherspoons and opened in 2013. "
