We're the best! Sandbach's historic Swan & Chequers has been awarded 'best bar' in the prestigious Northern Design Awards.

Sandbach Nub News told here how the Hightown pub was a finalist in the Northern Design 2023 awards.

Stockport-based family brewer and pub company Robinsons has revealed the pub won 'best bar' in the awards.

Joint Managing Director, William Robinson, said: "It's a delight to have been awarded such an accolade, a real credit to all involved.

"Not only is it testament to the skill and creativity of our property and design team, but it demonstrates our ongoing commitment to investment across our pub estate."

The project's in-house senior designer and project manager spent weeks transforming the previously tired high-street pub in Hightown, Sandbach into a timeless mid-century town bar.

The historic pub started out life as an old corn exchange dating back to the late 1800's and is now unrecognisable following the substantial investment by Robinsons Brewery.

Influenced by a Churchill speech which was made from the pub's balcony in 1954, the historic pub started out life as an old corn exchange dating back to the late 1800's and is now unrecognisable following the substantial investment by Robinsons Brewery.

The internal walls were removed to create a large open-plan bar area with plenty of natural light and columns were added to the main bar area stylised with cast iron Corinthians capitals and floating poser tables.

The interior was designed with a British mid-century era in mind, featuring influences from Victorian London's underground and the old industrialised city with brown chequered tile work and bespoke designed mid-century pendant lighting.
