Sandbach's long-standing town crier, who was granted Freedom of the Town in 2016, is stepping down.

Dennis Robinson will officially shake his famous hand bell for the last time at Sandbach Transport Festival next month (April).

Mr Robinson has worn his elaborate red and gold coat, breeches and tricorne hat, a tradition dating back to the 18th century, for more than 40 years.

Now Sandbach Town Council is on the hunt for a new town crier to replace Mr Robinson and is holding a competition at the Day of Dance event on June 1st.

Councillors were told the news at its recent meeting of the full council when it approved the appointment of a new town crier through the competition.

The new appointment is to be chosen by the Chief Officer in consultation with the mayor.

Town criers carry a handbell to attract people's attention as they shout Oyez, Oyez, Oyez!" before making their announcements.

In days gone by, before people could read and write, town criers brought the news to towns.
