A church project serving food to the local community has success on a plate – thanks to the Co-op.

Elworth Methodist Church in Station Road has received £330 from the Co-op Community Fund to buy new crockery for its work.

The church runs a cafe and coffee shop as well as serving coffee and lunches in the main church area on Tuesdays.

Manager of the Co-op's Lawton Way store, Colin Mason, and Sandbach Co-op Member Pioneer Arnie Laing, presented Elworth Methodist church lay leader, Jean Ellershaw with a cheque.

Jean said: "We're so pleased with this money which has allowed us to buy another set of soup bowls and plates for our lunches.

"The money will allow us to carry on with our work. More and more people are using our services and coming for lunch.

"It meant us having to carry heavy crockery from the cafe into the main church but now we can keep a set in both places."

Colin Mason, manager of the Co-op's Lawton Way store said: "Jean and her team do a wonderful job at the Methodist church helping the community in these challenging financial times.

"Myself and my team are proud to be able to support as part of the Co-op."

And it's not just crockery which the Co-op is helping the popular cafe with – the coffee lounge has also become part of the project to stop food going to landfill.

It is now part of 'The Sandbach Food Distribution Alliance', preventing food going to landfill, launched by Sandbach deputy mayor, Councillor Ann Nevitt.

Food is available for the local community to collect on Mondays from Elworth Methodist Church coffee lounge. The coffee lounge is open Mondays 11 am – 3 pm, Thursdays 10 am until 3 pm and Fridays 9 am until 11.30 am.

Sandbach Nub News told here how the project has been nominated for a Cheshire Life 'Champions award'.
