Three in five Cheshire and Merseyside's over-16 population have had their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine.

That's according to the latest NHS England data up to March 28, which also reveals that 95 per cent of Cheshire's over-50 residents have also had dose one.

The county's rate of 94.7 per cent is also the leading figure in the Cheshire and Merseyside sub-region, ahead of eight other NHS areas.

It has been described as 'a major milestone' by Cheshire West and Chester Council's director of public health, Ian Ashworth.

He added: "I want to thank all those involved in this successful programme, including NHS Cheshire Clinical Commissioning Group, all of our NHS vaccinators, our volunteers and supporting partners such as the Army, Fire Service and even schools who are helping with the smooth running of the programme.

"The biggest thanks has to go to all of our residents who have already taken up the offer of the COVID-19 vaccination. Please make sure you attend your appointment for your second dose to help protect yourself and those you care for.

"As restrictions start to ease, please do not become complacent, even if you have received your first dose vaccination. Please continue to wash your hands regularly, wear a face covering in enclosed spaces and keep social distancing to help stop the spread of COVID-19."

The information from NHS England also shows that nearly every over-70 in the borough has been jabbed — with take up rates among the 50-70 bracket also high.

Currently, Cheshire East's infection rate is 45 per 100,000 people, with CWAC's being 64.1.
