Work has started on resurfacing a car park in the centre of Sandbach.

Sandbach Small Common car park is currently fenced off and closed until September, around seven weeks, while the project takes place.

The project will also see more seating being installed and planters alongside new bollards.

Motorists are being advised to use alternative car parks on Scotch Common and Westfields while the work is being done.

Sandbach town councillor and Vice Chair of Cheshire East's Highways and Transport committee, Cllr Laura Crane said: "The surface of the carpark is in an awful state and requires attention so is being completely, thoroughly resurfaced.

"The alternative would have been to wait until after the festival but the weather is usually less forgiving in October and on balance of probability the car park would have been closed for an extended period of time to work around that.

"Summer should give the contractors the best chance of completing a swift job."

After a public consultation last, the original project to install canopies and have a radical overhaul were scaled back.

The work to be done will resurface the car park with high quality tarmac to reduce annual maintenance costs, provide 21 relined parking spaces (including four disabled spaces), telescopic bollards placed to enhance safety and road use enforcement, install a bike rack, a bench and four additional planters to enhance the look and feel of the area

Cllr Donal Hegarty, chair of the Small Common sub-committee said:" Once the work is done, the area will be smarter, safer and cheaper to run.

"We have also increased the number of disabled parking bays and provided additional cycling facilities within the town as part of the development – I look forward to seeing the finished product."
