Town's annual Tree of Light service called off due to Storm Darragh

Hundreds of people were due to attend the annual Tree of Light ceremony at Sandbach Cemetery last night (Thursday).

Sandbach was due to literally 'shine again' with a service to remember loved ones lost, featuring local choirs, readings music and the lighting up of the Tree of Light which contains handwritten stars to remember loved ones.

But the event was called off at the last minute and today's Christmas Market has been scaled down and outside traders cancelled due to health and safety and the expected wind speeds.

The Tree of Light service is organised by the Friends of Sandbach Cemetery and Orbitas Bereavement Services.

Mayor, Councillor Ann Nevitt said: "The wind was over the limit for allowing people on the stage. We had no choice but to cancel and luckily we did as there were flying fences at the cemetery at 5.30 pm which is when people would have been coming in.

"Sad but safety first, the children singing in the choirs kids were gutted but that is life I am afraid and we can't do anything about the weather. We have a very reduced Christmas market today too."

Despite a reduced event, organisers Sandbach Town Council say there is still lots happening inside for the Christmas Market on from 3pm until 8pm.

They say, the following will now be happening:

  •  Sandbach Indoor Market – Packed with fabulous stalls, shop units, Christmas gift ideas, and a cozy café.
  • The Ballroom – Featuring Olive & Stitch Artisan Market.
  • The Boardroom – Showcasing a variety of handmade foods.
  • Outdoor Food Trailers – Serving delicious festive treats

In nearby Alsager, damage, like Sandbach was caused to trees which blew down in the high winds as we revealed here.
