Tributes have been pouring in for a much-loved Sandbach rugby coach and family man who has suddenly died.

Sandbach Rugby Union Football Club has issued a statement on its Social Media page following the death of Darren Saffill.

Darren coached the under 13s at the Bradwall Road club and died on Saturday.

He has been described as "a true gentleman" and "everything a coach should be."

Sandbach RUFC say: "It is with extremely heavy hearts that we have to deliver such sad news.

"Devastatingly, under 13's Coach Darren Saffill suddenly passed away on Saturday.

"Our thoughts and prayers are obviously with the family at this extremely difficult time, especially his wife Helen and children, Harry and Effie. Harry is one of our under 13 players.

"Everyone that knew Darren will have felt his kind heartedness and friendly approach, particularly to all the young players he coached on behalf of the club.

"An absolute gentleman who will be sorely missed, especially to those who knew him most, especially our friends at Holmes Chapel RUFC where Darren played some of his rugby."

One parent said: "All of the children and parents of the U13's are so saddened to lose Darren.

"There were lots of tears from us all last weekend when we heard the news.

"The boys have all commented on how encouraging Darren was, especially when things weren't going well and how he cheered them on and praised them when they were.

"He was everything a coach should be and will be missed so much."

Another said: "Absolutely heart breaking news for all who knew Darren. He really was a true gentleman, with an extremely caring nature.

"It was only a couple weeks ago that he consoled Ollie and took care of him after we suspected a fractured jaw during a game.

"My thoughts are with Helen, Harry (u13s) and his sister Effie. We as a club and family will do all we can to support Darren's family and friends at this sad time."

Darren's funeral takes place at 12:00pm next Thursday (December 8th) at Birches Crematorium, Birches Lane, Lach Dennis.

Those attending are being advised to wear bright colours and rugby attire.
