A cricket club in Sandbach now has a new sports offering - padel, a game which is played like tennis but the ball is hit off the walls.

Two padel courts have opened at Elworth Cricket Club in London Road thanks to a group of cricketers and friends who have come together to launch the project - the first padel courts to open in the town.

Cricket lovers - Lee Morris, Tom Seabridge, Jamie Knowlson and Joe Seabridge - have got together to open Padel Den in a side section of the club's grounds in London Road. Courts can be booked here

Padel courts are smaller than tennis courts and are enclosed by glass and mesh walls and about a third of the size of a tennis court.

Elworth Cricket Club is known as 'The Foxes' and their ground 'The Den' - hence the name chosen for the new padel courts, 'Padel Den'.

Tom Seabridge said: "I've been playing padel for over a year and enjoy it so much. It's addictive. It's a cross between tennis and squash played in pairs and easier than tennis.

"It's accessible to all and the courts are floodlit allowing people to play at night. You just book on to the app and select your time. You then get a code - all the equipment is provided.

"We've also created a social platform chat system in the booking app which allows people to contact other players to set up games."

The four behind the project have invested their own money into the scheme which has been warmly welcomed by the local community.

The Padel Den is hosting a 'Summer Session' tournament this Saturday (May 17th) between 12-2pm, with Playtomic vouchers as winning prizes and there are still spaces to join.

"We' ve had great feedback so far and the courts have been warmly welcomed," said Lee Morris. "We wanted to give something back to the local community and offer a new sport for them.

"We've had support from local companies tro build them and we're delighted with the result."
