VJ Day in pictures - how Sandbach commemorated the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan

A beacon was lit, a flag raised and townsfolk joined together to commemorate 80 years since VJ Day (Victory over Japan).

A morning service was held outside Sandbach Town Hall at 11.45 am last Friday (August 15th) when the Mayor raised the flag followed by the National two-minute silence.

In the afternoon, Elworth Grange Care Home in Booth Lane held an event for its residents to celebrate the day with music and a display.

One of its residents, 101-year-old Tom Harrison who served in Burma on mine sweeper ships was there along with the Mayor of Sandbach, Councillor John Arnold and Richard Ayres, cadet force officer at Sandbach School.

In the evening crowds gathered at Sandbach War Memorial where the Sandbach Branch of the Royal British Legion, and the Sandbach and Middlewich and Comrades Branch of the Cheshire Regiment Association gathered to lay wreaths followed by the lighting of the beacon at St Marys Church.
