A war memorial in front of a Sandbach park looks set to be restored to its former glory.

The War Memorial outside Elworth Park is over 100 years' old and is showing the affects of age and pollution.

Now an Elworth councillor is setting up a project group in partnership with Cheshire East Council and the War Memorial Trust.

Councillor Nicola Cook, who represents Elworth on Cheshire East and is a Sandbach town councillor for the ward, wants to raise funds to restore it.

She said: "The War Memorial is a much-loved part of the Elworth community. The names on the memorial represent a generation of men who went off to war and never came back.

"Many friends and family members of those who are named on the memorial still live in Elworth, and it is so important that their service and sacrifice is never forgotten.

"A number of veterans have also noticed that the bayonet is missing off the top of the rifle so it will be great if this could be replaced as part of the restoration."

Anyone interested in joining the project group should email [email protected].
