A farm park near Sandbach has temporarily delayed the opening for the new season after heavy rain battered the area.

Lakemore Farm Park at Haslington was due to reopen for the season today (Good Friday) but owner Debbie Lewis has been forced to delay the reopening by what she hopes will be a few days.

Debbie said heavy rain over the last few days has left the land water-logged, but she hoped a few days of dry weather will see the opening taking place shortly.

She said it was the first time in 20 years of running the park that they have been forced to make this decision.

"I will be checking daily to see what the land is like. We need a few dry days and it will make all the difference," she said.

"We may be able to open on Easter Monday but nothing is definite at the moment. I am checking the weather daily and seeing what happens. We'll definitely be opening at some time during the Easter holidays."

The Clay Lane farm park is a popular local attraction for families and local residents and has put a post out on its Facebook page about the delayed opening.

It said: "The weather this year has been completely against us and the farming community, but we have worked tirelessly, night and day, to prepare the farm for reopening.

"We have been forced to keep the animals inside for much longer than we would ever want to do, but we've had no choice given the saturated conditions of the fields.

"The few dry days recently were a welcome glimmer of hope, and we continued to put a positive spin on things in the hope and faith we could safely open the farm.

"The rain over the past two days has flooded every field, every walkway, every outdoor animal enclosure, the mini golf, and forced the lake to overflow.

"The moment we step foot on the grass, it turns to mud… even the ducks are fed-up of it now! We will never compromise the welfare of our animals.

"Therefore, we will not be moving them outdoors until the ground conditions improve. It would be immoral for us to charge you to visit us at the moment, and it would be unsafe for us to reopen in this current condition.

"We're going to evaluate the situation on a daily basis, and we will of course update social media as soon as things change. We are so sorry for any inconvenience this may cause."

Lakemore Farm Park, whose website is here and Facebook page is here closed for the season in October.
