Wheelock Primary School has applied for permission to build an extension so it can accommodate an additional 105 pupils.

The proposed expansion would see the Crewe Road school, near Sandbach, increase from a 1.5 to a two form entry.

A design and access statement submitted with the planning application to Cheshire East Council states: "The proposed extension will create additional teaching space to permit an increase in 105 additional pupils and eight staff attending the school. This will result in an additional 15 pupils per year – reception to year six."

At the time of writing, one local resident has objected to the scheme.

The resident said: "The current size of the school leads to terrible parking problems, which would prevent emergency services and dustbin lorries being able to access the houses on our road.

"We also have to put up with abusive parents who block our drives and road.

"Any further extension of the school capacity will make the current level of problems increase to a totally unacceptable level."

He adds: "When the school has such a good plot, why does the extension always have to be so close to Blenheim Park?"

The new build would see an expansion to the far east of the school building into the playground to provide four further additional classrooms for year five and six pupils.

Two new reception classrooms will by formed by reducing the internal circulation area.

The proposal also includes a nursery.

The main hall will be expanded to provide an additional studio area and the entrance and reception area enlarged to provide additional office space.

A new library area will be formed from the internal circulation space.

The proposal also includes a new sports pitch and an additional five parking spaces.

The application, number 23/1449C, can be viewed on the planning portal on the Cheshire East Council website.

The last date for submitting comments is May 17, 2023, and the application will be determined by a planning officer under delegated authority.
