SHOPPERS at Sandbach's Co-ops have raised nearly £9,500 for local causes supported by the stores.

Every year Co-op stores select three charities that customers can choose to help through the Co-op Local Community Fund - this year it is two with the rest of the money going to Co-op's charity, the Co-op Foundation.

When Co-op members buy selected Co-op products and services, 2p for every £1 spent goes into their Co-op Membership account from which they nominate one of the chosen charities. The Co-op will also give the same amount to support community organisations and local causes.

Since 2016 Co-op members have helped raise more than £117 million which has been used to directly support around seven million people across the UK.

And this year's causes - Dementia Friendly Sandbach and Sandbach Woodland and Wildlife Group - were showcased at a celebration day at the Lawton Way Co-op in Elworth on Saturday (November 18th).

The three causes from last year honoured on the day, were Elworth Cricket Cub, which received £3,244.20, Sandbach United Football Club, which received a donation of £3,169.57 and Sandbach Lions Youth Brass Band, which received £2,932.21.

Mike Price, chair of Elworth Cricket Club, said the Co-op money is already paying dividends with the club's internal refurbishment which had seen the community facility in great demand.

"We're seeing more and more community use and more people coming through the door to use our facilities which is great," he said. "We're delighted with the final total and thank all the Co-op customers who chose our cause."

Sandbach deputy mayor, Councillor Ann Nevitt, was there at the event talking about her campaign involving the local Co-ops to save unused food going to landfill.

"All of this food is used by residents of our town and it's great to see how pleased these people are to have something extra that costs nothing. It helps the environment and stops more waste going to landfill."

Also celebrated at this year's cause event was the Friendship Bench unveiled earlier this year here as revealed here as well as three new bike racks at the Lawton Way Co-op.

Arnie said: "The Celebration Day this year was more orientated around the wider community support delivery in the last 12 months, not just about the Local Co-op Fund causes.

"It was great to see everyone here and taking part in the event."
