A new football stand at Sandbach United Football Club was officially opened yesterday (Saturday) – ahead of the first team's amazing 6 –1 win.

Sandbach Mayor Councillor Kathryn Flavell officially opened the club's new 50 seater Andrew Kimber stand with widow Janice Kimber and club chairman Peter Colclough.

The stand is named after former goal keeper coach, caretaker, club stalwart, Andrew Kimber, known as Andy, who sadly passed away.

Club chairman, Peter Colclough said Andy is remembered by many at the club and he played a major part in helping the first team become successful, always helping others.

"He was a big part of the coaching team and lent himself to all age groups. He played a big part in helping Sandbach get to where it is today and he was a massive part of this club," said Peter.

"It's a great privilege for us to have this new stand and for the part he played in this club getting to where it is today."

Cllr Flavell said: "I am delighted and honoured to open the stand and to be with friends and for this wonderful occasion."

The club was given around £18,779 by the Football Foundation towards the £25,000 stand and more than £5,000 was raised in a Just Giving page in memory of Andy Kimber.

Crowds who gathered to watch the opening of the stand then went on to see Sandbach United's First team romp to victory in a 6 – 1 win against Rocester in the first match of the new season.
