A Sandbach health food shop celebrating 40 years is asking residents to share their memories

Demeter Health in Welles Street, Sandbach is celebrating its 40th anniversary this month (July) and residents are invited to share their memories of the shop.
Founded in July 1985 by a lady named Vera, the shop's rich history had long been obscured by time, until a serendipitous visit this summer brought the past vividly back to life.
Vera, now in her 90s, stepped back into the store she first opened four decades ago. Accompanied by her son Philip, who also ran the shop for a time, she found herself moved by what she saw: a business still rooted in the same values of care, independence and community.
"She was nearly in tears with happiness," says shop manager Sarah Dicken. "She told us how proud she was that we'd kept the community spirit going."

It turns out the shop was first run by Phil, with the support of Reg and Vera. In the years since, ownership has changed hands – most recently in early 2024 – but the essence of the shop has remained grounded in care, continuity, and community values.
The current team invites customers past and present to share their own memories. Some have already begun to do so.
"I remember going in as a child… glass jars with liquorice root, and getting sesame snaps in the yellow wrappers," said Ruth Williams.
"I used to go with my mum to choose a little glass animal after the doctors… happy memories," said another. "Phil was always there. The shop smelt of incense and music was played. You could buy the tapes."
As part of the anniversary, Demeter is hosting a celebration next Sarturday (July 26th) from 9am to 4pm. The event is free and open to all, with goody bags, free cake, and one-day-only discounts.
The team hopes the day will also prompt people to share stories, photos or even childhood memories of the shop for inclusion in a growing digital archive.
Today, under new ownership, Demeter continues its community mission: offering eco refills, supporting local makers, and hosting events upstairs for wellness practitioners and local groups.
The shelves are still stocked with wholefoods and herbal remedies – but more importantly, the spirit of kindness and curiosity remains.
As Sarah put it: "We see ourselves as caretakers of something bigger than us. Shops like this are about more than just health – they hold memory, meaning, and connection."
