Bike tracks on Sandbach station's steps set to transform rail travel for cyclists

Cyclists using Sandbach station could soon be having their access to and from trains eased as a result of an initiative by the Friends of Sandbach Station (FOSS).
Having bolstered their bank account with the £425 proceeds of a quiz evening at the Midland Inn, the group has embarked on a £6,000 fund raising campaign that will be the biggest in the group's history.
They are raising money for the installation of bicycle tracks on the steps on both sides of the footbridge that currently provides the only access to two of the three station's platforms.
FOSS's chairman, Christian Shawcross, said: "Our long term objective is the provision of lifts to operate alongside each flight of steps but we appreciate such a project is long and costly involving many different organisations probably up to Government level.
"However the installation of tracks within the existing staircases to assist the increasing number of cyclists who use the trains these days is, we believe, achievable."
Following approaches to various organisations with an interest in the increasingly-popular station, FOSS has received the news that Sandbach Town Council is to support the project with a £2,900 grant.
Christian Shawcross adds: "We are extremely grateful for this pledge which kick starts our quest to help cyclists to get their bikes to and from the Manchester-bound platform 2."
