The leader of Cheshire East Council has said he is "hopeful" that Covid-19 outbreaks can be contained despite a doubling of cases over the last week.

Cllr Sam Corcoran praised the council's local test and trace team which he says recently stemmed an outbreak in Handforth.

Speaking on a video posted to social media, Cllr Corcoran said: "I am hopeful that the Cheshire East Council Test Trace team, now contacting all cases in Cheshire East as part of a Local-Zero pilot programme, will have more of an impact than the failed £20bn national Test Trace system.

"Effective test reporting and contact tracing enabled the council to quickly contain and manage the outbreak before it spread further."

The council leader has encouraged residents to take the rapid Covid tests on offer in order to help find any cases before they spread.

You can book a test through the council website or by phoning 0300 123 5032.
