Cheshire East's Labour councillors ask for Boris to step down

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is bringing all politicians into disrepute and Conservative MPs should have the backbone to boot him out, Cheshire East's Labour councillors have said.

Civil servant Sue Gray's 'update' report into allegations of parties at Downing Street during the lockdown period, refers to 'failures of leadership and judgement by different parts of No 10' .

The Metropolitan Police is now investigating 12 of these events.

Cllr Nick Mannion (Macclesfield, Lab) told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS): "By clinging on he's bringing all of us into disrepute regardless of what political persuasion we are. "The only person who can sack the Prime Minister is the party he represents, so I just wonder how many Conservative MPs will have the courage to tell him to go and to go now." Labour group leader Sam Corcoran and Sandbach councillor said Tory MPs should force Boris Johnson out. "Andrew Mitchell (Con) and former Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May clearly have no confidence in the Prime Minister, but Operation 'Save Big Dog' was in operation with several Conservatives asking for other matters to take priority – Brexit, Ukraine and energy prices," said Cllr Corcoran. "However, perhaps the most significant part was the empty spaces on the Conservative benches. There are far too many Conservative MPs who won't turn out to support the PM, but don't have the backbone to write a letter to get rid of him." Cllr Janet Clowes, Conservative group leader on Cheshire East Council, has already lost one councillor because of 'partygate'. As reported by the LDRS last week, Cllr Nicky Wylie, a nurse who has worked with the NHS and the vaccination programme throughout the pandemic, quit the Conservative Party because of the allegations of partying at Downing Street. The Poynton East and Pott Shrigley councillor now sits as a non-grouped independent on the council. Speaking after the publication of the Sue Gray report, Cllr Clowes said: "We welcome the interim report from Sue Gray but at the current time, in light of the police investigations that are still ongoing, it would be inappropriate to make any comment at this time."
