Council-run day services set to be overhauled

By James Kelly 1st Feb 2021

Day opportunities in Cheshire East are set to undergo an overhaul, as the council looks to develop "a strategic vision" for the service.

The council's cabinet is set to approve the review of services, which are for those with physical disabilities, are older and frail, have dementia, mental health problems or a learning disability.

In a pre-cabinet report on the agenda item, it is argued that developing a "vision" for the opportunities will improve flexibility and give taxpayers better value for money.

The report says: "Over the years, day opportunities services in Cheshire East have seen little investment and development. It has predominantly been building-based, offering relatively limited choice and control for those that attend.

"By developing a greater range of options around day opportunities we will be able to offer viable alternatives to traditional day services, which will provide a more person centred and flexible approach.

"We need to ensure that all our day opportunities services deliver value for money and are efficient and where we pay more for some services there is a clear rationale for doing so."

Currently, 556 residents benefit from day opportunities, which are delivered by Care4CE, as well as by approximately 20 independent organisations, according to CEC.

It's also hoped that the new vision will allow the council to respond to the borough's increasingly elderly population — with there set to be 32.4 per cent more over-65s in Cheshire East by 2035.

CEC's cabinet will discuss the plans at its online meeting on February 2, at 1pm.
