From the M6 motorway, Sandbach's St Philip's Church can be seen in all its shining glory, standing out for being a rather unusual colour.

For St Philip's does not conform in colour to what anyone would think of as being a typical church colour both inside and out.

Even the pulpit inside is pink but everything else about the pretty church perched in rolling countryside in Hassall Green is as you would expect.

Its new vicar, the Rev Joe Smith, explained how it's thought the church, with a sister church, St Mary Magdalene in Alsager, got its unusual colour.

"Rumour has it, a vicar in the 1960s went on holiday to the Mediterranean and loved the colour of the buildings there," said Rev Smith.

"When he came back to the corrugated church he decided to brighten it up with a splash of colour. It's certainly unusual but still very charming."

But the colour of St Philip's isn't the only unusual thing about the church for it started off life in Alsager. In 1883 it was moved by horse and cart to its present location in Hassall Green when a permanent church was built in Alsager at St Mary's."

Rev Joe Smith, who was previously a Priest at St John the Baptist, Cardiff and Chaplain to Cardiff University, has already given his first service at St Philip's.

"The congregation was very welcoming and we enjoyed a lovely Harvest lunch afterwards."

Rev Smith will give a service once a month at St Philip's at Hassall Green and he is also looking forward to the Christmas fayre which the church is holding on Saturday, 14 November.
