One lane was closed on the M6 near Sandbach earlier today (Thursday) after a cow escaped and strayed on to the side of the motorway.

Police were called at 7.23 am after a motorist spotted a cow near the hard shoulder between junctions 16 and 17 northbound.

A spokesperson from National Highways said: "A cow had escaped from a field through a fence and strayed onto the side of the motorway.

"Fortunately the cow was led safely back into the field. Repairs to the fence were made to prevent it happening again, so the lane one closure remains in place at present until that work is completed."

A Cheshire police spokesperson added: "At 7.23am on Thursday 3 October highways officers were called by a concerned motorist who reported that there was a cow near to the hard shoulder between junctions 16 and 17 north, and they were concerned it may get onto the motorway.

"Highways attended and the farmer was called to move the cows into a nearby field."
