A road in Sandbach had to be closed over the weekend after firefighters were called to put out a car fire.

Shortly after 3pm on Saturday the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to reports of smoke coming from a car on Congleton Road.

When the fire engine arrived from Crewe they found the vehicle "well alight" and parked near other cars.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "The road was temporarily closed and a firefighter wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire with a hose reel jet.

"The car was then damped down to make it safe, with temperatures monitored with a thermal imaging camera."

The crew were at the scene for about an hour and it was not revealed how the fire started.
