A Sandbach town councillor and his recovery firm came to the rescue to clear a major road in the town after it became flooded and blocked by the rain.

Councillor Dave Poole is used to providing a call-out service for vehicles and bikes all over Cheshire as he owns Poole's Towing and Recovery but last night Dave and some of his team pulled on their waders for work of a different kind.

Old Mill Road going to and from the motorway at Junction 17 was heavily flooded, so much so a black BMW broke down in the road and had to be pulled to safety.

Highways staff put up barrier to close the road off but were heavily stretched in other areas by a major incident so Cllr Poole's company stepped in.

"Leaves had blocked the grids. I watched the comments on Facebook and decided to get some of my staff to help me out clearing the road.

"We got bars, rods and bits of a tree and pulled out the grids. It took about 45 minutes for the water to disappear. All in all we were there for about three hours. We left at midnight."

Cllr Poole added that a street sweeper had been this morning to clear the road and ensure there wasn't any debris still on the surface.
