Cheshire East Council is refusing to ban construction HGVs from travelling through Sandbach town centre despite safety concerns from residents.
Sandbach resident, Sarah Bradley, called for HGVs to be banned from driving through Sandbach town centre following an accident with a 91-year-old pedestrian.
But Cheshire East say this cannot be done due to deliveries for businesses in the town centre something which is disputed by residents who say action could be taken.
Councillor Mark Goldsmith, Cheshire East Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "We understand the concerns raised about HGVs travelling through Sandbach town centre and the impact larger vehicles can have on residents and other road users.
"However, it is also important that businesses in the town centre can continue to receive deliveries and be serviced effectively, which can require access for larger vehicles.
"We encourage HGV drivers to use the most appropriate routes available and to travel responsibly through the town centre."
Sarah Bradley says a temporary TRO - traffic regulation order - could be installed for the duration of the construction of the Middlewich bypass.
She said: "They have already formally acknowledged and apologised for the fact the increased volume of HGV's is causing problems for Sandbach residents.
"The large quarry trucks I have witnessed driving through the town centre are only doing so to avoid congestion on the bypass and cut across the Northern side of the town across from Congleton Road to Middlewich Road.
Traffic Regulation Orders can and do have exemptions for deliveries and refuse trucks, emergency services are not restricted so it seems sensible to eliminate the risk and remove the potential harm."
