A project to unravel a network of fascinating underground tunnels beneath Sandbach's historic town centre has taken another step forward.

Sandbach Tunnel Network project was out again recently with Seddon Surveys who are donating their time and equipment free of charge.

Further surveys under the surface of the oldest parts of the town have taken place and now the tunnel project organisers are awaiting the results.

Sandbach Nub News told here how relics from project a while back were displayed at Sandbach Makers Market.

Previous work unearthed:

  • A rare clay pipe used by canal workers on the Sandbach to Liverpool network
  • Saxon Medieval strap ends
  • Georgian coins and gaming tokens c1800
  • A Saxon bronze ring
  • A late Medieval bronze pendant cross c1500
  • A crotal bell frog Viking/Anglo Saxon

Lead organiser for Sandbach Tunnel Network project, Linden Burt, first got a hint of the tunnels when he worked as a chef at the historic Old Hall in Sandbach.

He has been working on the project for several years as Sandbach Nub News told here and the group has a Facebook page here

Linden said: "We're trying to piece it all together and have so many ideas. Ideally it would be good to have a museum.

"Once we find the network of tunnels, it would be good to make them more visible, maybe perhaps by having a glass roof over one."

Matt Todd, technical director of Seddon Surveys who have worked on historical projects before with the Time Team, said: "It's an interesting project and anything we can do to help we will.

"We're using a round penetrating radar sonar to capture information. The town is old enough to have to this network of tunnels.

"We're looking for a better picture of what's happening underground around the War Memorial."
