Investigation underway after fire in the building above a Sandbach takeaway

Sandbach High Street was closed to vehicles last night (Friday) after a fire started in the building above Hot Spot takeaway in the town.

Four fire engines from Alsager, Congleton, Crewe and Winsford went to the incident at 8.18 pm. firefighters used breathing apparatus and hose reel water jets to tackle the blaze.

Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service said an investigation has been launched and urged people to stay away from the area while they were dealing with the incident.

A spokesperson from Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service said: "Firefighters were called to reports of a fire on the first floor above a takeaway.

"They tackled the fire wearing breathing apparatus and using hose reel water jets. The premises were evacuated and crews checked that fire hadn't spread within adjoining properties and a shared roof space."

Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service said by 10.10 pm the number of fire engines was reduced to two and an investigation was underway as to the cause of the blaze.

John Roberts, from Skinsmiths Tattoos in High Street said: "The fire was nothing to do with us. It was in an adjacent room.

"I got a call at 9 pm last night and came straight down. We're busy clearing up today. Unfortunately the smoke came into our studio.

"The support from the local community has been amazing. We've been brought cups of coffee and food to keep us going."
