People of Crewe are coming together for a demonstration against government and employers - showing support for striking railway and communication workers.
East Cheshire People's Assembly and the Crewe and District Trades Council are taking part in a demonstration of solidarity with striking workers this Saturday (October 1).
The demonstration will be a show of support for both the railway and communication workers, taking simultaneous action over job security, pay, and working conditions for the first time in Crewe and Nantwich.
The event will start from the Horse Landing at Crewe Station at 9am where ASLEF, TSSA, Unite, and RMT Union members will be on the picket line.
Demonstrators will then be marching to the CWU picket on Weston Road, where action is being taken by Royal Mail workers.
East Cheshire People's Assembly and the Crewe and District Trades Council are encouraging members of the public and trade unionists from other local branches to join the demonstration.
They believe this will show of solidarity with workers and to call for an end to the Government.
Sam Colclough, interim chair of East Cheshire Peoples Assembly, said, "The government expects us to pay for their crisis by accepting falling living standards while the richest in our society enjoy tax cuts worth £45bn. But we won't pay for their crisis.
"The People's Assembly supports the striking workers and demands pay increases in line with inflation for all workers, as an absolute minimum.
"Join us on Saturday outside Crewe station and in London on 5 November for our national demo."
Steven Roberts, President of Crewe & District Trades Council, understands everyone is feeling the pinch - but believes a strike is necessary.
He said: "A strike is very much an action of last resort.
"We are all feeling the pressures of the 'Cost of Living Crisis' and whilst costs are rising each week, wages are falling in real terms.
"Employers must recognise that this situation is not sustainable and there must be a point at which the economy will go into terminal decline.
"The employers and workers must get together in meaningful talks and pay and conditions to avoid the impending economic crisis."
Nina Hammill, secretary to Crewe & District Trades Council, believes the money is there for striking workers - just put in to the wrong places.
She added: "While ordinary people are struggling to eat, heat their homes and pay bills, we are seeing big businesses making record profits and big payouts to shareholders.
"This is in addition to lifting of the cap on bankers' bonuses - so we can clearly see the money is there to provide a decent standard of living for all."
