Sandbach Leisure Centre in Middlewich Road is currently closed after a fire at the nearby school.

Two fire engines, one from Middlewich and one from Congleton, went to Sandbach High School and Sixth Form College at around 3.07 pm today (Friday).

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "Firefighters in breathing apparatus have been tackling a fire in a single storey building of a school kitchen.

"Full evacuation of the building was carried out as the incident was being dealt with. The gas and electricity supplies were isolated and the fire was put out.

"A high pressure fan was used to clear smoke which had spread to other areas nearby as crews continued to damp down and monitor with a thermal imaging camera."

A spokesperson for Sandbach Leisure Centre said it would be closed for the rest of the day.

A message on their Facebook page said: "Swimming lessons have been cancelled up until and including the 4.30 pm lesson and customers have been contacted by the team.

"We will of course keep you updated as soon as we know more. Thank you for your patience during this time."
