Local businesses are set to make a stand against planned car parking charges in Sandbach.

Around 16 local companies will display 'closing down' signs in their windows on Saturday (October 14) following the news Cheshire East Council is considering plans to start charging in council car parks.

Residents are currently being consulted on the plans, and have until November 1 to have their say.

A campaign group, Action Against Cheshire East Parking Charges - Sandbach, has already been launched to try and fight the plans.

The business' protest will coincide with an organised march from The Cobbles in Sandbach to the Sandbach headquarters of Cheshire East Council, Westfields, on Saturday at 3pm.

One business owner told Nub News: "The businesses are already struggling and parking charges could be the nail in the coffin."

Campaigners have already called on as many people as possible to join them in their protest.

Lead organiser, Laura Dytham said: "We are protesting about the possible introduction of parking charges.

"I am so frustrated at the council for wanting to put parking charges in Sandbach in a cost of living crisis.

"People on minimum wage are going to have additional costs just to go to work.

"It will affect local businesses as most people will go to out of town retail parks.

"From a safety point of view people collecting kids from the high school will end up creating traffic and possible accidents."
