The new chair of Congleton Conservative Association, Councillor Patrick Webster, has welcomed ex-chancellor Rishi Sunak's visit yesterday.

But he is now hoping that the area gets a chance to welcome the other candidate in the Tory leadership battle for Prime Minister, Liz Truss.

Cllr Patrick Redstone

Mr Sunak was in the county yesterday looking to whip up support for his campaign to be prime minister, meeting with locals in the Swettenham Arms.

Cllr Webster, who lives near Alsager and represents Odd Rode on Cheshire East Council, attended yesterday's event.

He told Nub News: "It all happened very quickly. I received the invite on Saturday afternoon, asking if I wanted to attend.

"Around 100 people attended. I understand he had been in Yorkshire and was making his way down to Stoke-on-Trent for the debate tonight.

"He set out his policies and gave an uplifting speech as you would expect and seemed to be pleased to be there.

"We are now hoping to see Liz Truss so we can hear her speech and what she is planning.

"We want to be balanced and have a balanced view of the two candidates," he said.

Mr Sunak went behind the bar for a photo opportunity, pulling a pint of Robinsons Brewery's flagship Unicorn beer.

Macclesfield MP David Rutley has put his name to Mr Sunak's campaign and urged local party members to choose him to become the next prime minister as detailed in this story https://sandbach.nub.news/news/local-news/rishi-sunak-visits-cheshire-ahead-of-tv-leadership-debate-in-stoke-on-trent-143298

Sandbach Nub News, along with millions of others, will be eagerly watching tonight's leadership debate and the battle to become the country's Prime Minister following Boris' resignation.
