Keira Evans knows a thing or two about athletics and gymnastics and now she's got another string to her bow - as a world champion cheerleader.

The talented Sandbach School student, studying psychology, criminology and business studies, trains several times a week at Hazel Grove near Stockport was part of the team which won the Level 2 junior x-small

Seventeen-year-old Keira auditioned for her place in the Crimson Heat Phoenix's Hydra group and was lucky enough to get a place which saw her travelling to Florida for the World Championships.

The teenager, who started honing her skills at the tender age of three and attended Sandbach Gymnastics Club in Millbuck Way, is part of Sandbach School's talented athlete programme.

Keira says the event was tough but the group's coach said he was certain "the team had a podium position in them".

"We got 98.6 out of 100 and won by 0.1. We were so proud to get to the final and were bursting with pride. I still can't believe it's happened. It's such a brilliant feeling," said Keira.

Keira, who lives with her parents and brother in Elworth, arrived home to find her family had decorated the house to celebrate the massive win.

But Keira, who travelled with the rest of the team to Florida, wasn't alone across the Pond taking part in the event which saw teams from all over the world competing.

Her mum and dad, Nichola and Anthony Evans, were there in the audience to watch her.

"We didn't actually meet up with the squad but we were there supporting her," said Nichola. "It was one of the most nerve- wracking experiences we've been through but also very enjoyable and fantastic to see them take first place."

And Keira's cheerleading skills will be on show again when Hydra compete in the BCA British Allstar Nationals next weekend in Telford.
