Meet the Sandbach man doing a daring stunt in Las Vegas to help the families of veterans
By Deborah Bowyer 8th Feb 2026
Not many people would take part in a daring stunt for charity the day after their wedding but that's exactly what one Sandbach man is doing.
David Crosthwaite, who works at Ashfields Primary Care Centre, flies out to Las Vegas in America in April to get married and the day after his wedding he's jumping off the Strat for the Ripple Pond charity.
The brave former soldier and policeman spends his time helping veterans and their families with any issues they may be struggling with in his job as care coordinator/veterans lead at the Sandbach medical practice.
Now the 64-year-old, who served with the Cheshire Regiment before becoming a police officer in Merseyside, wants to give something back to the Ripple Pond charity which supports adult family members caring for a loved one.
The Strat stands at 1,149 feet making it the tallest freestanding tower in America and David is doing the jump with his cousin, Steve Downey. Together they have set up a JustGiving page for donations here .
He said: "Every day, families and chosen family members face the often hidden struggles of supporting a loved one that is serving or has served in the Armed Forces and is living with physical or psychological injuries.
"The Ripple Pond exists to ensure that these families supporting an injured veteran or serving person are not alone, that they are truly seen, heard and supported."
The Ripple Pond says behind every injured serving person or veteran there's a family that also serves in the provision of care.
David, who refers people to this charity from his work at the Middlewich Road medical centre, is hoping to raise around £2,000 from his stunt and has set up a JustGiving page to raise money.
He is marrying his partner of seven years, Joy, and will be jumping from the Strat, the day after their wedding in Las Vegas.
And David's bride-to-be Joy, 59, is just as adventurous as her husband-to-be it would seem! For straight after the couple tie the knot, they're heading off to complete a zip wire event in Las Vegas on the same day.
"We looked at things we could do in Las Vegas and saw these two things. The Strat was one and the zip wire another which Joy and I are doing on our wedding day. We'll be in Las Vegas for five days and will celebrate our honeymoon later in the year."
Good luck to David in his adventurous stunt!
