A Haslington man who has driven hundreds of miles to the Polish/Ukrainian border with medical kits says they are now on their way to a hospital to help people injured in a rocket attack.

Retired network engineer, Steve Bratherton, arrived at the border today (Tuesday) and is currently waiting in a refugee centre to be partnered with a refugee family.

The heroic 64-year-old is due to appear on TV news tonight (Tuesday) with his story before he sets off to drive a fleeing family to a place of safety in Europe.

Speaking via Social Media to Sandbach Nub News today, Steve said: "My burns kits are on the way to lviv hospital as there a 150 people with severe burns from that rocket attack two days ago.

"My Polish contact, Kamil, took the kits to another border crossing three hours away as the border is closed here for people going into Ukraine."

Steve spent more than £4,000 of his own money buying 40 burns responder kits and set off early Saturday morning on his epic journey.

He is currently waiting in a refugee centre to be partnered with a family whom he can take to a place of safety in Europe for them to start a new life.

"I'm waiting in a refugee centre close to the border, I could be here for hours," said Steve.

Sandbach Nub News told here. on Friday how Steve had come up with the idea to help Ukrainians.

Steve, who was seriously injured himself following a hit and run, said: "I couldn't sit here and do nothing. I only started thinking about it last weekend and the idea came to me.

"I was lucky enough to have my life saved by doctors and nurses and I want to help those less fortunate caught up in this war."

Steve was flown to the Royal Stoke Hospital with life-changing injuries following a hit and run accident in Crewe three years' ago.

He said: "I can't thank the NHS for the help they gave me then and these poor people have nothing. This is the very least I can do."

Steve set up a Go Fund here. to help fund his mercy mission.

He is due to appear on ITV News tonight and says if all goes well, he will be doing the trip again to help the refugees.
