Motorists faced long delays on the M6 today (Tuesday) following a five-vehicle collision.

The M6 northbound was closed for several hours following the accident involving four HGVs and a tanker at around 4 am between J18 and J19.

Two lanes of the northbound carriageway were reopened around 8.30 am but police say temporary closures may need to be put back in place while recovery work is undertaken.

Cheshire Police are appealing for information regarding the accident and are urging motorists to avoid the area and find an alternative route.

One person is believed to have sustained serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Stoke Hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening at this time.

Superintendent Gareth Wrigley said: "I appreciate the disruption that this incident is likely to cause, and I want to reassure motorists that we are working hard to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.

"Local diversion sare in place, but we are urging motorists to avoid the area and delay their journeys if possible."

Anyone with any information in relation to the collision is asked to contact Cheshire Police on 101, or visit www.cheshire.police.uk/tell-us quoting IML 1839287.
