All lanes of the motorway between junctions 19 and 18 near Middlewich were closed today (Thursday) after a car caught fire.

Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service said they were called to the incident at 4.15 pm ad used one breathing apparatus to deal with a car on fire in a layby.

A spokesperson said: "Highways closed all lanes of the motorway to allow the incident to be dealt with safely.

"The fire was fully extinguished and crews dampened down the vehicle to ensure it was safe. Highways officers then took over the scene, and lanes three and four of the southbound carriageway have been reopened."
