A group set up to help Sandbach station flourish and  make the station a more welcoming and passenger-friendly place has a new chairman.

John Scarrott, who has held the position at the Friends of Sandbach Station (FOSS) for the past eight years, has stepped down and has been replaced by Christian Shawcross.

During his term of office John, of Teal Drive, Elworth, has guided the group to five successes in the annual awards presented by Cheshire Best Kept Stations which embraces more than 50 stations across the county.

The achievement was recognised by Mr Shawcross, a Recruitment Director also of Elworth, when he accepted his new role, commenting: "John has brought the Friends of Sandbach Station through some difficult times to the strong unit it is today with more volunteers than ever. The passengers who use the station owe him a big debt of gratitude."

John's most recent project, the funding and acquisition of a water butt on the station's platform 2 alleviating the need for volunteers carrying out plant maintenance to carry full cans of water across the bridge, was completed last year.

The 2025 plans include additional Saturday dates for the pop-up café, siting of a new planter and participation in the national celebrations marking 200 years of railways in Great Britain.

FOSS has been engaged in many projects ovet the years including including installing an original platform sign dating back to 1952 on platform two as we revealed in this story here .
