Station enthusiasts were celebrating today (Thursday) when a four month project to install an original platform sign dating back to 1952 reached the end of the line.

Friends of Sandbach Station were given an original Sandbach platform sign earlier this year and today the sign was installed near its original place.

Now passengers arriving and departing from the station will be able to see the sign which has been restored by an Alsager blacksmith and installed by a Sandbach firm.

Adrian Johnson owner of DSL spotted a plea in Sandbach Nub News in July here. appealing for a company to come forward to install the sign.

And this morning Mr Johnson and a colleague did all the groundwork and installation for the sign on Platform 2 near where it would have originally stood.

He said: "It's such a good thing for our station to have back and adds more heritage to Sandbach Station.

"I read the story asking for help and just knew I had to step in. I do use the station to travel month it will be good to see this sign in place."

John Scarrott, chair of the Friends of Sandbach Station said he is delighted it's now in place and passengers will be able to see it.

"We're so grateful for everyone who has helped get this project sorted. It's taken about four months to get all the permission and Northern and Network Rail have been brilliant.

"The sign was donated to us in January but we couldn't do much because of Covid. It's taken about four months for us to get all the permission.

"It's quite an achievement to be able to put the sign on to the platform. We're absolutely delighted."

FOSS (Friends of Sandbach Station) will officially be unveiling the historic sign at a launch on Saturday (November 20th).
