A town centre pub which has been closed for a while looks set to reopen.

The old Saxon Grill/former Crown Hotel has been empty for some time and residents were worried the building was falling into disrepair.

But builders have been spotted working inside the Market Square property and the garden area has been shut off.

A spokesman confirmed the listed building was reopening as an "eaterie" and was now privately owned. He refuted rumours it was going to be a Turkish restaurant.

No further details were revealed about the plans for the building which is opposite the town's historic Saxon Crosses.
