Cheshire East Council has announced a controversial bike lane in Sandbach will be amended following feedback from residents.

The bike lane on Old Middlewich Road was installed last summer as part of the council's active travel measures to encourage more cycling and walking in the town.

Parking bays were removed and bollards installed to accommodate the two-way lane.

An petition was launched late last year to have the infrastructure removed and attracted over 1,000 signatures.

An update on the active travel Sandbach website states: "In light of feedback received, we have reviewed the experimental measures in Old Middlewich Road and have proposed changes."

The changes include narrowing the lane, reducing the number of bollards, and reintroducing time-limited parking bays on the "south side of Old Middlewich Road".

Westbound cycling will also be provided "on road".

In a separate amendment to the active travel measures, the update read: "Following feedback we have reviewed the 20mph zone coverage in Sandbach. We propose to return the speed limit on the A533 to 30mph, reduce the 20mph area to south of the commons roundabout on Congleton Road and from Offley Road."

The council also announced they have secured £588,000 from the department for transport for the second phase in their active travel schemes in other parts of the borough.

Cllr Laura Crane said: "People's travel behaviour has changed during the lockdown – and this council is determined to lock in and build on the benefits of more people walking and cycling so that our town centres are safer, healthier and more welcoming to shoppers and visitors.

"I would emphasise that all of these proposals are subject to consultation. We will decide which schemes to deliver when we understand the views of local residents and road-users. We will continue to work with our town and parish councils, local communities and stakeholders to develop and refine proposals before anything is built.

"Our aim is to create schemes that are right for each community and developed in partnership with each local area and local people – which is why the public consultation and feedback is so important."
