A Sandbach councillor is calling on parents and carers with disabled children to come forward and help shape a park for the future.

Councillor Nicola Cook, Elworth councillor for Cheshire East, is spearheading a project to make Elworth Park more accessible for disabled children.

Elworth Park is near Sandbach station and has picnic benches, a children's play area and a large grassed area.

Cllr Cook, secretary of the Friends of Elworth Park has successfully gained £52,000 in funding from Cheshire East Council, to buy and install new disabled-friendly play equipment in the park.

The funding has come from monies given to the council by developers as part of the Section 106 agreement.

It has taken Cllr Cook around a year to unravel and identify the funding and now she would like to use it on this project.

She said: "Every child should be able to play in a park whatever their ability or challenge. As a mum, I would hate my child not to be able to play on equipment in a park while other children can.

"I want to make this park more accessible for disabled children. If we don't spend this money it goes back to the developers."

Cllr Cook now wants to work with parents and carers of disabled children to help identify play equipment suitable for disabled children.

"It's a really exciting project and we want to get families involved. The park has an interesting history and is a valuable part of the community.

Anyone interested in getting involved can contact Nicola Cook by email at [email protected].
