A pharmaceutical company looks set to get the go-ahead for plans to extend its manufacturing facility so it can make climate-friendly inhalers and create 150 new jobs.

Bespak, at Holmes Chapel, specialises in inhaled and nasal drugs for conditions such as asthma.

Next week, Cheshire East's southern planning committee will consider the company's application to expand on to a 1.98-hectare area of its site to the west of the existing manufacturing building and to the east of London Road.

The application has been recommended for approval by planning officers and is also supported by Holmes Chapel Parish Council.

A report from the Cheshire East planning officer states: "The proposed development will deliver two new high-specification fill lines and associated technical and support spaces which are critical to expanding the production capacity at the site and supporting the growing demand for respiratory health products.

"Propellants used in inhalers are classed as greenhouse gases.

"This expansion will allow Bespak to produce next-generation environmentally friendly inhalers which use significantly less greenhouse gases.

"It would also result in approximately 150 new jobs at the site."

The scheme proposes a new 7,091sqm two-storey extension to the existing building and will occupy an area on the building's south-western elevation which currently comprises a soil mound.

An external service yard and a covered storage area of 270sqm are also proposed.

The officer's report states: "The proposed development would not result in significant highway safety issues, and the number of car parking spaces to be provided is acceptable given the sites sustainable location and access to public transport."

It adds: "There are potential impacts during construction and impact on the loss of trees.

"However, based on the supporting information and associated assessments, these matters can be kept to a minimum and controlled with the use of suitable planning conditions."

The southern planning committee meeting takes place at 10am at Delamere House in Crewe next Wednesday (3 December).
