Police have launched an investigation into a fire at one of the bowling green pavilions in Sandbach Park.

Firefighers were called to the blaze at around 2.50 pm yesterday (Sunday) after receiving reports of a small fire in the pavilion hut in the lower bowling green.

It is thought books had been taken from the "library" in the telephone kiosk and set alight.

Sandbach fire station is next to the park but firefighters came from Middlewich and Crewe as the Sandbach crew were out on another call.

The small fire in the doorway of the bowling pavilion spread to cladding and was put out by firefighters using a water backpack. Crews removed the cladding.

Enquiries in relation to the incident are ongoing and anyone with any information should visit www.cheshire.police.uk/tell-us quoting IML 1206228.
